A Street Car Named Desire Movie vs. Play

I enjoyed the movie a little more then the written play. There were various little differences, which didn't really take away from the writing. Marlen Brando was quiet attractive and it seemed like he was oiled up every scene. The actors did a great job portraying the characters. Marlen Brando did a great job with Stanley he made him come alive. The actress that played Blanche did a really good job playing the "crazy" Southern Belle. She even moved the way that I pictured with over dramatic arm movements etc. Stella was the only actress that I found kind of ho-hum. She bored me, but I guess she was what Stella seemed like in the play. I also didn't picture her in a house coat and she never really looked pregnant or was it just me.

Blanche was even better on screen she showed many signs of her nuttiness. The hands constantly to the face and rubbing her eyes, her constant bathing, making sure she her hair is perfect. She is always wearing the perfect thing and even tries to cover up her drinking, which I feel was a problem. She was very interesting to watch. I felt so bad for her at the end of the movie she had such a rough time (loss of her family home, her job, her reputation, her boyfriend, her sister, etc.) She was such a tragic character to begin with, but in the movie she was just moving.

I find that this movie was a great reproduction of the play. That this movie brought to life all the reactions and actions of a very nutty person who couldn't act right. They showed how the character was supposed to be developed and played out and the play being perdormed on the stage wouldn't have had time to develop the character so much.

I agree that Vivien Leigh did an excellent job bringing the character of Blanche to life. It was very strange for me to see Vivien Leigh, who was also Scarlet in Gone With the Wind, go from embodying a seductive and strong-willed but otherwise typical Southern Belle to portraying a Southern Belle spiraling downward and dying out. Her eyes which once twinkled with mischievous schemes to steal someone’s boyfriend now rolled around aimlessly and bulged with her insanity. She is clearly a very versatile actress. I thought that her periodically scampering about to hide really reinforced the message that Blanche was not a normal person. That is, no other character would suddenly run off from the people to whom he or she was speaking simply because the conversation took an unpleasant turn, but she would. It was amusing to watch since the house only had two rooms, and she couldn’t get away, blatantly exposing the illogic nature of her mental state. The audience could also see her nervous energy as she’d fidget and scream at events that others barely paid any attention to, such as a train passing by. Since we could no longer read stage directions to understand who the characters were, the actors had to demonstrate it, and she did so very well.

I agree that all the characters were true to the written play. The actress who played Blanche went above and beyond craziness. The way she threw herself around, how she shied away from Mitch, her constant crying, talking nonsense, and even her voice. Many times she sounded so childish, it was almost annoying. For instance, when she asked Stella for a drink or to get her dress, her voice sounded like a little girl who was going to be scolded.

Stella's character in the movie was definitely, in your words "ho-hum." She was somewhat boring and was more like a prop than an actual character. But I did enjoy her in the end, when she left Stanley. It's too bad that she waited so long to do it. She could have saved Blanche from being raped.

I agree that the actors and actresses did a really good job bringing Tennessee Williams' characters to life. Stella was rather boring to watch but thats the way I pictured her when I was reading also. She just wanted to please everyone which took away from her having her own personality. I also agree that Stella never looked pregnant. I think that this is both because of the media at the time and when we were reading that is what it also seemed like. We found out Stella was pregnant and then all of a sudden she was having a baby. The time line didn't seem to quite match up.

Yes I can defenitly agree with you Stella didnt really have a part. And the parts that she did play were so fast and am I the only one but she was depressing to watch, she was a weak women. Another thing is that you can actually see ho crazy Blanche was by watching the movie especially at the end when she threw herself on the floor. I especially felt bad for her at the end because she went crazy because of what was done to her.

I also liked the movie a lot better then the play. I liked being able to see the characters brought to life. I agree, Blanche was a lot nuttier in the movie than in the play. I think that was because we were able to see her actions in person. Her body language and facial expressions said a lot. She was definately under a lot of stress and very emotional.
